better support use of keyboard

At the moment I encounter situations where I think the program is slowing me down when using the keyboard.

My major problem is that it is sometimes unclear which element is having the focus. It could be a goal, it could be the title of the goal in the chart or it could be the title of the goal in the sidebar.

E.g. if you enter a new goal > enter a title for this goal and hit enter -> the goal in the chart should have the focus BUT i you hit CTRL-x the goal is not cut.

Another situation is, that the title of a goal is not alway shown as selected. If you enter a new goal via shift+ctrl+g it is possible to enter a new title and the default text is overwritten BUT the default text is not highlighted. So there is no clue that the default text can simply be overwritten.

It is hard to navigate between the the goals with the keyboard if it's not clear where the focus is. There should also be a key shortcut to give the focus back to the goal in the chart (e.g. after entering some text in the sidebar).

And some of the key shortcuts are not shown correctly (e.g. the dropdown triangle on the top right shows some shortcuts with only CTRL).

I am using the keyboard extensively and would be happy if you could improve Goalscape in this regard.

    Hello Chris

Thanks for takin the time to contact us.

The hotkey shortcuts do indeed depend on whether you have selected a goal or one if its attribute fields in the panel.

If you select a goal (by clicking its slice in the goal map), the Goal Edit shortcuts (Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete) apply to that goal – and you can use the cursor arrow keys (Left, Right, Up, Down) to navigate to the next goal.

When you select an attribute in a goal (Name, Importance or Progress sliders, Notes field, etc), the relevant hotkeys will apply to that attribute (Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete for selected text; Left and Right cursor arrow keys to move the sliders). You can use the tab key (and Shift+ tab) to jump to the next attribute field: note that when you use tab to select Importance or Progress, the digits will be selected, rather than the slider.

    1. Thanks for your error report about the Delete Goal shortcut not working on a newly-created goal: I have escalated this to the development team. In the meantime you can use the right-click shortcut options (Cut, Copy, Delete, etc): these work perfectly whether or not the goal is selected and regardless of the field selected within a goal.

    2. The 'goal name text not selected' error you are reporting here looks like a duplicate of the one in your previous discussion – we have responded on that discussion.

If the goal name text selection error you are reporting here is a different one please post again to clarify the difference. Please also confirm whether the issue is in Desktop or Online (or both), indicate your OS (and, for Online, your browser) – and, if possible, provide screenshots to illustrate it.

    3. The 'keyboard shortcut' that enables you to ensure you are applying shortcuts to the selected goal (rather than to a specific field within a goal) is to click another goal in the goal map, then (if necessary) re-select the one in which you have been updating attribute details.

Note though that to allow you to use the Left and Right cursor arrow keys on the same slider (Importance or Progress) in multiple successive goals selected, if you are using a slider, the same slider will be selected when you click a different goal. To 'switch off' this slider selection, click in the Notes field before you select a different goal: then the hotkey shortcuts will apply to the goal.

    4. In Desktop you can see a full list of hotkey shortcuts by selecting the relevant option in the Help menu. Please post again to clarify what you mean by 'the dropdown triangle on the top right shows some shortcuts with only CTRL' (a screenshot would be very helpful).

    All the best

    Richard

    Thanks for your detailed reply.

First of all: I am using the desktop version 2.9.6 on Windows 10!

This is different: If you add a new goal with SHIFT+CTRL+G you CAN change the title. => BUT there is no visual clue that the default title 'New Goal' is selected and will be overwritten if you start typing. In this situation it is unclear which element has the focus.

In THIS situation you can change the title -> but one doesn't know because the visual clue is missing.

(The other problem I reported elsewhere describes a situation where you CAN'T change the title because it is NOT selected.)

    add3)
The whole thing about keyboard shortcuts is to use the keyboard - isn't it ;-)
So clicking with the mouse is no solution. Please consider to add a keyboard shortcut for this.

Additional examples for missing keyboard shortcuts are:
    - show/hide goal panel - goto main view - focus view on goal - focus view on parent - mark goal (without the need to choose the colour with the mouse)

    add4)
    I have attached a screenshot.

In the meantime I noticed another problem with unclear focus: If I enter a new goal > enter a title > and hit enter => which element has the focus? I would assume the goal itself but I can't navigate between the goals with the cursor keys or delete that goal!?

Altogether I hope you can give additional attention to the whole idea of being able to use the keyboard. This is at least a prominent feature you are advertising and one I would really appreciate.

    Thanks
    Chris

    Hello Chris

Quick follow-up: we have identified an error that means the Ctrl+ Backspace hotkey shortcut to Delete Goal is not working on Windows machines and we are working urgently on a fix for this.

We have also fixed some other issues that you and others have raised, so we are intending to release a new set of Updates very soon. Watch out for announcements...
